چکیده
Background: Nephrotoxicity is an inherent of certain anticancer drugs. Aim: This study aimed to assess the protective effect of onion oil and selenium against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in male rats. Results: Cisplatin (5 mg/kg, i.p.) caused significant increases in serum sodium, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, total sodium and potassium excreted in urine, urine volume and lipid peroxides measured as the malondialdehyde content of kidney, with significant decreases in serum total protein, creatinine clearance, reduced glutathione content of kidney and kidney superoxide dismutase activity as compared to the control group. On the other hand, administration of onion oil (100 mg/kg, p.o.) or selenium (1 mg/kg, p.o.) for 14 days with a single cisplatin dose on the 10 th day ameliorated the cisplatininduced nephrotoxicity as indicated by the restoration of kidney function and oxidative stress biomarkers. Conclusion: Onion oil and selenium showed protective effects against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity.

Protective Effects of Crocin against Cisplatin-Induced Acute Renal Failure and Oxidative Stress in Rats
Background. The major side effect of cisplatin, used in some tumours, is nephrotoxicity. Reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage are the most important factors in cisplatin-induced acute renal failure. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the protective effects of crocin against cisplatin-induced acute renal failure and oxidative stress in rat. Methods. In this study, animal...
متن کاملEvaluation of the effects of taurine on cisplatin-induced kidney injury and oxidative stress in male rats
Introduction: Cisplatin is used as a chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of human ovarian and testicular cancers. This study was designed to investigate the protective role of taurine against cisplatin-induced kidney injury. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups (n=8) (1) saline-treated group (2) cisplatin-treated group (10 mg/kg, i.p.), (3) group that received taurine (2...
متن کاملProtective effects of aqueous extract of M. Pruriens Linn. (DC) seed against gentamicin induced oxidative stress and nephrotoxicity in rats
In the present study, we investigated the effects of the aqueous extract of Mucuna pruriens against gentamicin (100 mg kg -1 per day for six days) induced oxidative stress and nephrotoxicity in rats. Administration of gentamicin to rats induced a marked renal failure, characterized by a significant increase in urine volume and serum creatinine and urea levels. There was a significant decr...
متن کاملProtective Effect of P-Coumaric Acid against Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity and Hepatotoxicity in Rats
Background and purpose: Cisplatin is used in chemotherapy for cancer patients. But, it has adverse effects on some organs, including the kidney and liver. P-coumaric acid is a polyphenolic substance with multiple biological properties. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of p-coumaric acid on renal and hepatic side effects of cisplatin. Materials and methods: This experimental st...
متن کاملProtective Effects of Dendrobium nobile against Cisplatin Nephrotoxicity Both In vitro and In vivo
Dendrobium genus was reported to contain alkaloid, bibenzyl, fluorenone, phenanthrene, sesquiterpenoid, and phenolic acid, which have biological properties. Our aim was to investigate the protective effect of an aqueous extract of Dendrobium nobile Lindl (DNE) against cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (AKI). Quantification of four phenolic acids (4-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, syringic, and fe...
